About Hampton University
Hampton University is a private university that is one of the top historically all-black colleges in Virginia. Named for the city of Hampton, the university was established in 1868. Several members of the American Missionary Association founded the school as a way to educate the black men and women granted freedom at the end of the Civil War. Mary Smith Peake was one of the first teachers hired due to the secret work she did to educate and teach slaves before the war. Originally called the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute, it became the Hampton Institute before adopting the Hampton University name. The Mansion House and some of the other buildings on the campus are on the National Register of Historic Places. Hampton University now offers degree programs through 10 colleges and dozens of departments, including the School of Liberal Arts and Education and the Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communication.

Both the school and community mental health counseling programs offered at Hampton University have accreditation from the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CAREP). This accreditation does not apply to any of the other counseling majors or the psychology programs.
