Florida Memorial University
The School of Arts and Sciences
Florida Memorial University (FMU) is a private coeducational four-year university in Miami Gardens. FMU is one of the 39 member institutions of the United Negro College Fund, as the school is a historically Black, Baptist-related institution. The university is is ranked second in Florida and ninth in the United States for graduating African-American teachers. It is one of the oldest academic centers in Florida. It was founded in 1879 as the Florida Baptist Institute in Live Oak, Florida. The School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) considers itself to be the heart, mind, and soul of the University. Bachelor of Science in Psychology
The Bachelor of Science in Psychology program provides students with a better understanding of human cognition and behavior. Students learn the methods, concepts, principles, and theories of modern psychology. Students learn techniques, which can be used to improve self-esteem, motivation, and sensitivity. Florida Southern College (FSC) is a private college located in Lakeland. In 2011 and 2012, The Princeton Review selected Florida Southern’s campus as the most beautiful in the country. In 2014, US News and World Report ranked FSC as the 5th best University in the Southern Region of the United States. The Bachelor of Science in Psychology program places a stronger emphasis on the Research Methods used in modern Psychology. Some of the learning outcomes expected for students in this program include:
- Thorough Knowledge of the Scientific Method – This refers to knowledge of the scientific method as it is applied in psychological research. It includes knowing how to formulate testable research hypotheses, how to evaluate plausible alternative hypotheses for one’s findings, the importance of replication, identifying the differences between science and pseudo-science, and the differences between experimental and correlational studies.
- Understanding Statistical Applications – This refers to knowledge of how statistical tests are commonly used in psychological research. It includes choosing the appropriate statistical test for a particular research design, and interpreting the results of statistical tests.
- Understanding Measurement Principles – This refers to knowledge of measurement principles, including the different types of scales that can be used in research, and the concepts of reliability and validity.
- Becoming Effective Consumers of Research – This refers to knowledge of what is involved in being a good consumer of research. It includes knowing how to locate scientific research on a psychological topic of interest and knowing what is included in the important elements of scientific articles.
- Utilizing Research Ethics – This refers to knowledge of what constitutes ethical treatment of human and animal research subjects, as well as procedures for insuring that researchers comply with these principles.
